The MEDATLAS hydrological data base, has been created by a consortium of several data centers, including HNODC (Greece), IEO (Spain), EPSHOM/CMO (French navy), IFREMERJSISMER the coordinating center (France) and ICES (Denmark) as the supervisor of the quality control procedure, in the frame of the MEDATLAS project. This project is a MAST supporting initiative for ocean data and information management. Its objectives were to assemble a comprehensive data base of temperature and salinity profiles collected in the Mediterranean sea by t he scientific laboratories and the navies, to check them for quality and to revise the climatological statistics by using this updated date set. An important part of the work has been devoted to define a common protocol to... |

An advanced computer and communication technology was used to develop an integrated system and software tools for managing a great diversity of oceanographic data collected in the Mediterranean Sea during 1996-2000. Data were obtained during 108 sea cruises, carried out within the framework of the large-scale international research project MATER (mass transfer and ecosystem response), which was financially supported by the Marine Science and Technology (MAST) Programme of the European Union (EU). Data collection involved the active participation of various research vessels and personnel coming from 58 different laboratories of 13 countries. Data formatting as well as automatic and visual data quality controls were implemented using internationally accepted... |

The Bay of Biscay climatology is the synthesis of all the in situ data collected in the bay of Biscay area as far as 15°W, in the 20th century and mainly by IFREMER, SHOM, and WDCA. It shows temperature and salinity monthly information through the whole water column with a 1/10 degree resolution. The resulting atlas was produced by an optimal analysis which can reflect different scales: shelf and abyssal plain. A fine scale on the coast reveals all the local effects, including plume and upwelling, and a large scale on the shelf where a slower signal is obtained due to the large scale circulation |

The Mediterranean Forecasting system Pilot Project has concluded its activities in 2001, achieving the following goals:
1. Realization of the first high-frequency (twice a month) Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) system for the Mediterranean Sea with XBT profiles for the upper thermocline (0-700 m) and 12 n.m. along track nominal resolution;
2. Realization of the first Mediterranean Multidisciplinary Moored Array (M3A) system for the Near-Real-Time (NRT) acquisition of physical and biochemical observations. The actual observations consists of: air-sea interaction parameters, upper thermocline (0-500 m) temperature, salinity, oxygen and currents, euphotic zone (0-100 m) chlorophyll, nutrients, Photosinthetically Available Radiation (PAR)... |

Reconstructions of Mediterranean ocean temperature fields back to 1950 show a proxy relationship between heat content changes in the North Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean Deep Water ( WMDW) formed in the Gulf of Lions in winter, because of consistent air-sea heat fluxes over these areas, strongly correlated to the North Atlantic Oscillation ( NAO). |
